Need Directions?

In this performance-turned-service, participants, identifiable by the universal symbol for information, will walk around New York City's Meatpacking neighborhood giving directions in German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, French, Swedish, Korean, Mandarin or Hindi to tourists. Participants use NYC maps and give advice on routes and destinations to assist and make connection with foreigners, making their vacation or journey a more pleasant one. Photo gallery here.

Part of the large Art In Odd Places (AiOP) festival. Every October, AiOP takes over 14th Street; this year they have 60 artists creating a range of original works from performance to installation throughout the month.More on the AiOP 2009 Festival: http://www.artinoddplaces.org/

blue, or what can you keep

I just finished putting up an installation in our project space. You can see photos in our gallery or watch a video slideshow here.

The installation will run July / August 2009. Using videos and kept objects, the exhibit explores the question, what can you keep (literally and not) when someone is no longer here?

if you feel like it

if you feel like it was presented in 2008 in site-specific locations like Fort Greene Park in Brooklyn, NY and in 2009 at the Upstart Festival at Brooklyn Arts Exchange (video here). A movement-based, audio project where participants listen to audio instructions of everyday gestures and movement, the project explores choice: what movement choices does one person or a group of participants make when given the same instructions?

a message for you

a message for you, both a solo project and a large, video project commissioned by The Present Group in 2008. The Present Group version consisted of fifty short, edited videos where participants of all backgrounds and ages in New York spoke a simple and sincere message on-camera, "I love you, I miss you, I wish you were here" to a stranger who is a subscriber of The Present Group. Videos were sent to subscribers around the country. The solo version contains the same message and features the artist in various locales.

205 luquer art project

Hello everyone. This is Aaron from apartment 1L.

I am an artist and I am hoping you can participate in a very quick and simple art project for our building. Enclosed in the envelope you will find a sheet of paper and a note card. On the top half of the paper I am hoping you will tape or glue a photograph that means something to you. On the bottom half of the paper I am hoping you will tape or glue the note card with a few words about the photograph. That is it.

Once I start collecting a few of your projects, I will hang them in the first floor hallway for everyone to see for a couple of weeks. It will be like an instant art gallery in our hallway. I will then return your photographs and note cards to your door. You can tape or glue the photo and card any way you want. You can even get creative and decorate the paper around the card and photo. Feel free to say as much or as little as you want about the photo and sign your name on the card. The photo is up to you; it can be funny or sentimental etc.

Let me know if you have any questions. You can drop off your envelope at my door anytime. I will take good care of them. I figured this would be a simple way for us all to participate in something together and learn something about each other. Each apartment should submit one photo.

Thank you,

Aaron
